Da' Fish Report (22-1-2009)

Again, I apologise to all for not updating the site, but now with my hsc out of the way and tafe starting soon I will hope to have it done once a month.  The last dive I went on was with John Featherstone and Tim McDonald, out to the big island. The Southern end was holding a huge amount of bait as at the time the current was running uphill, however I was informed last night that it has swung around and is now flowing downhill, this means the northern pinnacles and northern ends of islands should be producing some quality fish. The water temperature as dropped somewhat from the 24 degrees it was, to around 22, however hopefully the warmer water eddies round and brings in the larger pelagic species. On my dive I was lucky enough to encounter large Spanish around the 20 kilo mark, cobia up to around 12 kilo, smaller Samson fish and Amberjack, Snapper. I also spotted my first Wahoo, however it was close to 20 meters away from me and swimming in the wrong direction. I got a spear into one of the lager mackerel but the shot tore loose instantly, and the fish disappeared, much to my disappointment.  Club membership is due for the New Year and forms can be found on the site. Happy hunting and good luck!!

Also could people please upload pictures as I have none of recent fish taken? If you do have some please email them to me, batiste.luke@gmail.com. Good luck in the water!!

Da' Fish Report (4th August 2006)

OK so I finally got the Magazine (SDM Issue #11) off to the printers and have some time to write a couple of lines about the fish activity over the last couple of weeks. Well if you got "real lucky" you might have got in on one of the better days that we have had but on the whole it has been AWFUL...I seem to say that a lot about the conditions here. But that said the few good days that we have had have been great, just there isn't enough of them. although since I have been ridiculously busy it hasn't worried me too much.

Oh yeah the fish. Some nice reefies being taken with Pearl Perch being the pick of them. Large snapper abound but have been, as always, too damn smart. Couple of smaller Jew but conditions haven't been great for hunting them as the swell just doesn't seem to want to abate long enough for anyone to have a crack at them.

Da' Fish Report (21st of March 2006)

Well what a turn around. 5 weeks of rain, swell, muddy water and zero fish just about, was leaving me at least a little despondent, but finally the water has crept in far enough to reach the outer islands and many of us have been rewarded with our persistence. I have just experienced the 3 best days fishing I have even seen. Massive Mackerel, SHOALS of Wahoo, Yellowfin tuna, Jew, Cobia…absolutely amazing. Sunday’s comp was one of the best I have ever seen with 11 Wahoo, 4 Spanish, 4 Cobia and a myriad of other species. See the photo album, it just about says it all.

Da' Fish Report (1st of February 2006)

You know things are on the up and up when you've got to make the page bigger to cope with all of the "Fish of the Week". Some great fish taken and even some better ones missed (nothing like 6 months of cold dirty water to give you a very bad case of the Bluewater Syndrome....that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it). Spanish +20kg taken by both Brett and Pete great fish guys, especailly Pete who gets his 1st +20kg Spanish. Some very nice fish sighted including 20kg Cobia, more big Spanish, big Jobfish, GTs, but oddly enough No Wahoo! Not sure what's going on there, maybe they have continued on down south with the exceptionally warm water.

Mick F. saw his first REALLY BIG Spanish all of 12ft with a nice white belly. Of course in the worst possible conditions of about 6m visibility. The fish took a bit of a look but decided he looked way to "chewy", and left him alone. Not sure which is worse seeing them or not seeing them but knowing they probably saw you!

Da' Fish Report (9th of February 2006)

Some more spanish have been taken (congrats to Jordan on geting his first....there will be some "ribbing" going on now I imaging) and some BIG Cobia seen and lost, except for AK who managed to land a great speciemen down at SWR. I lost another biggin' through some awful point blank shooting and a little bird told me that one of the George's (Trev I think?) lost a good one also. So some nice ones about. Those things are like armour plate "battle fish"!

The fisho's have been reporting some good Sambo catches around the lighthouse (up to 20kg....don't ask me how you land those things on a line) and with the water on the improve I am thinking the fihsing is only going to imporve.

Sharks, Sharks and more sharks! they seem to be everywhere at the moment. With another GWS sighting at Red Rock, of all places. Pinned down a couple of divers against a rock for a little harrassment. This is second hand info so don't quote me on that. VERY large bronze whalers (may have even been their larger cousin the Black tip whaler) frequenting the "Pole" so keep that in mind, if you are out that on your own.

Flags, Floats and General Safety
I got "jagged" by a live bait that was being trolled last week. Not a nice experience, make sure you are visible especially if you are going to dive in areas that are regularly frequented by line fisherman. A boat flag is not only good idea it is the LAW and a flag on your float is also a GOOD idea. If you are going to anchor and dive amongst other boats my advice is DON'T. Go and find somewhere where you are not going to get run over. If you are there first fine, but just make sure you get eye contact from the fisho's if they pull up and start trolling around you. NOTE those trolling SHOULD give you 50m clearway but that doesn't mean that you won't end up with a hook lodged in your skull! A little safety goes a long way.
